Emotional Literacy Support at Charlton

Charlton Primary School now has an ELSA!

What is an ELSA?

ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant.

We know that there will always be children and young people in school, facing life challenges that detract from their skills to engage in learning. Some children will need more help from those around them to understand and manage their emotions.

The role of the ELSA has been developed and supported by educational psychologists and recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are addressed.

Mrs Amos is currently undertaking training to be able to plan and deliver sessions to support our children who need a little bit more support. Her sessions are designed to be fun, using a range of activities involving games, role play and arts and crafts. The sessions are carried out in school and will provide children with a safe, calm space for them to feel supported and nurtured.

During the sessions there are opportunities to explore

  • recognising emotions
  • self esteem
  • social skills
  • friendship skills
  • anger management
  • loss and bereavement

Children will be referred to our ELSA by their class teacher and with close communication with parents. Over a bespoke course of 6-8 weeks the ELSA’s aim is to develop new skills and coping strategies.
